M+D+F 2009: Call for furniture design submissions




Think you might have what it takes to create the next American classic in modern furniture? M+D+F 2009 is a juried exhibition of innovative furniture by emerging designers in the Seattle area. Organized by the DWR Seattle Studio and juried by local creative professionals in the design, architecture, art and fashion worlds, M+D+F provides an opportunity for peer, public and professional recognition for up-and-coming designers and firms. Call for Submissions and Proposals: The Open Video Alliance

The Yale Law School and its partners in the Open Video Alliance are seeking to bring together about 400 participants for a conference in New York. The organizers hope to bring online video up to the standards of accessibility and decentralization that we’ve reached with other forms of web communication (blogs, email, etc…).

The conference is accepting submissions of movies and video art that will “showcase the creative potential of artists in the open video space.” They’re also accepting proposals for panels, workshops and other events. The deadline is March 19, 2009.

Design Within Reach Champagne Chair Contest winners



The 50 winning chairs have been announced and are on a nationwide tour, stopping
at select Studios along the way. Contest entrants were asked to create an original miniature chair design using only the foil, label, cage and cork from no more than two Champagne bottles. The Chairs were reviewed by an esteemed panel of design experts and judged on craftsmanship, creativity, character and innovative use of materials. Please join us in toasting the talent.

9th Annual Shriekfest Call for Entries


Have a screenplay you’re just itching to get out and have read? Now’s your chance! The 9th annual Shriekfest is currently accepting submissions for its yearly international horror, thriller, science fiction, and fantasy screenplay competition based in Los Angeles, California.

Local Los Angeles resident horror fans and writers also have the additional opportunity to attend the monthly networking parties held at Hollywood Billiards, generally the last Tuesday of every month.

The festival itself is to be held later this year, in October, and will include a multitude of film screenings, parties, and panels for the enjoyment of all. Awards in various categories will be given out and will include hard cash, loot, and shiny trophies. Call for submissions: Bicycle parking for the city of Seattle

Artist sought to design on-street bicycle parking Seattle’s Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs in partnership with the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) seeks an artist or artist team to design on-street bicycle parking. Artist-designed bicycle parking is a product of the SDOT Art Plan. Bike racks will fill one or two motor vehicle parking spaces on the street. Each car-sized space will accommodate up to eight bikes.

The selected artist will work with SDOT staff to design, fabricate and install bicycle parking at two to four on-street locations. The new program addresses the expanding need for bicycle parking and is part of the city’s Bicycle Master Plan, which aims to triple the number of people bicycling in Seattle over 10 years.

Eligibility: Professional artists living in Washington state

Budget: $30,000 for design, fabrication and installation

Deadline: 11 p.m., Monday, April 13, 2009

Pecha Kucha (the Japanese for the sound of conversation) gathers creative individuals to share their work and ideas in an informal environment. Pecha Kucha Night was conceived in 2003 by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham (from Klein Dytham architecture, in Tokyo), as a place for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public. Each presenter is allowed 20 images, each shown for 20 seconds each - giving 6 minutes 40 seconds of fame before the next presenter is up. This keeps presentations concise, the interest level up, and gives more people the chance to showcase their ideas, visions, work/areas of curiosity.

Pecha Kucha Night is non profit and is now running in 171 cities globally.

Roxo's back in town, well sort of...



One of CoCA's favorite photographer/creatives
Alexandra Roxo comes back to town in the form of two of her film shorts, both screening at the Shriveled Eyeballs Video Festival in Georgetown.

"Out of the Blue" and "The Heart is What Remains" will be screening in Seattle this upcoming weekend organized by Shriveled Eyeballs Video Festival Willow Fox. "Out of the Blue" just won "Best Experimental" at the NJ Film Fest and is up for "Best Experimental" at the Female Eye Film Fest in Toronto. Both films are also in the A.I.R. Gallery Biennial in NYC opening March 6th.

The Shriveled Eyeballs Video Festival runs from Friday, February 27 - Sunday, March 1

TEA PARTY magazine: Call for submissions

TEA PARTY magazine (www.teapartymagazine.com) seeks submissions of fiction, poetry, photography, visual art, comics, interviews, and feature articles for its upcoming issue #18, to be published in June 2009. Our theme for Issue #18 is THE FREE ISSUE. What does FREE mean to you? How does FREE speak to our investment as individuals and as communities, and what meaning does remain FREE in our society at this particular point in history? What isn’t FREE but should be? What do you give away and what’s been given to you? What would you like to be FREE of? What’s considered FREE to the public? How do you spend your FREE time? Sins Invalid: Call for submissions



Sins Invalid is seeking submissions from performers, writers, visual artists and other cultural workers on topics of disability and sexuality for relationship-building and future collaboration.

This call is open to all artists familiar with the experience of disability, especially artists from queer communities and/or communities of color. Submissions can include all types of artistic expression – performance art, video, spoken word, dance, storytelling, song, visual media, and words on page – whose core expresses sexuality, power, healing, embodiment and activism.

The Vancouver Queer Film Festival: Call for submissions

The Vancouver Queer Film Festival is the largest queer media event in Western Canada and each year host 11 days and nights of outstanding cinema, performances, networking events and parties, all in the backdrop of beautiful mountain and ocean views.

The Vancouver Queer Film Festival privileges outstanding innovation, regularly showcasing work that confronts stereotypes, pushes boundaries, provokes and titillates, and above all, highlights the tremendous diversity of queer artists working in Canada and internationally. We present over 100 films each year, including short- and feature-length documentaries, narrative and experimental works.

Pinnacle Awards: Call for submissions for furniture design




The American Society of Furniture Designers is now accepting submissions for the 2009 Pinnacle Awards, which honor the best in mass-market furniture design.

Established in 1995, the Pinnacle Design Achievement Award is meant to promote better design among home furnishings are produced in large numbers and are available for sale through retail furniture stores.

Any designer or manufacturer is welcome to enter their designs to the contest. The deadline for submissions is June 1.

The winners will be announced during a gala ceremony on Oct. 19 at the Fall High Point Market.

A call for original photography for Morpho Gallery’s 4th annual photo exhibit. Size limitation is 36” maximum in any direction, framing included. Original photography only, any medium including digital and alternative processes.
Entry fee: $25 for three images, $5 for each additional image up to five per person. Jurying will be done from slides or CD, along with the entry form and check. For on-line jpg images, submit with the completed entry form and entry fee paid through Paypal (see details below).

Juror: Karen I. Hirsch is an award-winning commercial, editorial and fine art photographer based in Chicago. In 2008, she was named Best of Chicago in the photographers category by the U.S. Local Business Administration. Her photos have been published in Communication Arts, Graphis, Architectural Digest, Forbes, the Chicago Tribune and many other magazines, newspapers, books and calendars. In 2007, the Chinese government invited Hirsch to be one of ten American Society of Media Photographers to document the city of Rizhao for the project "Rizhao in the Eyes of Foreign Photographers." In 2003, the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and the Illinois Arts Council sponsored her one-woman exhibit "My Chicago," featuring more than 200 images of Chicago's people, places and events. Hirsch's prints can be found in private and corporate collections.
