Artist sought for Spokane Street Viaduct expansion

View of the Spokane Street Viaduct at the intersection of First Avenue and Spokane Street.
The Office, in partnership with the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT), seeks an artist or artist team to develop permanent artwork in conjunction with the widening of the South Spokane Street Viaduct in Seattle's SoDo (South Downtown) neighborhood. The 60-year-old elevated roadway serves as a key transportation link between West Seattle, Port of Seattle terminal facilities and the SoDo district and provides access to State Route 99 and Interstate 5.

The selected artist will develop a creative response to the expansive viaduct and its industrial setting. Possible locations for artwork include the underside of the viaduct's elevated roadway, its forest of support columns, the spaces surrounding new traffic ramps, the lower Spokane Street roadway and its new sidewalk and/or other areas adjacent to the viaduct. Safety issues prevent placing artwork on the elevated roadway.

The call is open to established professional artists living in the United States. The project budget is $60,000 for design and travel. It is anticipated that $340,000 will be available for fabrication and installation, for a total project budget of $400,000. The application deadline is 11 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 17. A link to the online application is available here.

The 16th Annual Art Marathon

Sorry for the hiatus but things have been busy at CoCA. Most notable was the recent 16th Annual Marathon which was hosted at the Engine Room of the old rainier Brewery in Georgetown. The event rocked, the artists were great, the art was amazing and Georgetown as usual was the place to be.

If you missed it, here is the link to our Flickr site where you can find photos of the event. Paul Swortz of HonuPhoto pitched in and helped photograph the event, here's a link to the photos on his Flickr site.

Leonard Shlain: "Art & Physics" at Town Hall

Tuesday, May 13, 2008 | 7:30pm

Location: Downstairs at Town Hall, enter on Seneca Street.

Leonard Shlain, a surgeon and author, proposes that visionary artists are the first members of a culture to use image and metaphor to see the world in a new way. These preverbal expressions of novel concepts are then later formulated by physicists. His theory is rooted in brain research and in Jungian archetypal unconscious said to be stored in DNA. Using examples of specific art works alongside the world-changing ideas of great thinkers, Shlain demonstrates how throughout history changes in music and literature synchronized with those occurring in art and physics and explores why these connections occur.

Tickets are $5 at the door only. Town Hall members receive priority seating.

"Donegal Dress", 30"x30" silver leaf, metallic pigment and india ink, by Piper Hopkins. 2008.

Piper Hopkins: New Work explores the nuances of emotion and nostalgia through frenetic line work, jarring static forms and scale. By creating visual juxtapositions of loose figural forms placed on highly reflective metallic and silver-leafed backgrounds, Hopkins delves into how memories and feelings of nostalgia are interwoven, contained, or obfuscated by time.

Piper Hopkins: New Work opens May 10th
Area 51, 401 E. Pine St
Seattle, WA 98122

Opening reception 6-9pm.
Valet Parking will be provided.
