HIAWATHA LOFTS 1st ANNIVERSARY & URBAN ART FAIR

LOCATION: CENTRAL DISTRICT / JACKSON PLACE NEIGHBORHOOD
(one block east of Rainer between Dearborn at S Charles St.)

DATE: March 8th, 2009 / 12-7pm

We are pleased to present the official Hiawatha 1st Anniversary and Urban Art Fair on Sunday, March 8th. Completing its’ first year of operation, Hiawatha Lofts invites the public and local community to come and enjoy a full day of art, dance and independent local business provided by Hiawatha tenants & retailers.

The Hiawatha Lofts are located in the Jackson Place Neighborhood and made possible through ARTSPACE, a national nonprofit dedicated to creating, fostering, and preserving affordable space for artists and arts organizations. On the first floor retail space, C Art Gallery, My World Dance, Café Weekend, Youth Venture & Working Dog Bicycles will be showcasing their retail and nonprofit businesses that have brought new character and life to the Jackson Place & Rainier Avenue communities.

Hiawatha tenants open their doors to the public! Experience four floors of work/live art studios, open house viewing from 12 - 5pm. The Anniversary Show will exhibit tenants new work in the Community Room on the 1st floor.

C Art Gallery / My World Dance & Fitness
These two spaces will be transformed into the Urban Art Fair venue for local artists to exhibit and sell works to the public. Learn more about C Art Gallery’s mission to support cultural understanding through promoting diversity in the arts. Come dance, get fit and have fun with My World Dance demonstrations and class opportunities.

Café Weekend
Sponsoring the event, Hiawatha’s designer-run, boutique café will offer its’ regular fare of coffee & espresso from Caffé Vita, Morning Glory Chai, teas, sweets, pastries & limited edition art books. Additional food from Hallava Falafel and entertainment from the FYA Filipino Drill Team will be featured in the front plaza to celebrate the event.

The scheduled events include:
Noon – FYA Filipino Drill Team
1 pm – Miho & Diego Duo (marimba, drums, and quena--Andean flute)
2 pm – TBC Youth Speaks (spoken word)
2:20 pm – My World Dance Demos (Belly Dance & Funk Aerobics)
3:45 pm – Leisure Sounds (Jazz, Reggae, Funk project)
5:00 pm – Hiawatha Concert Series featuring Blame Sally (local four part harmonized folk-pop band)
