Design Competition for Bruce Lee Museum

Hong Kong officials announced a design competition to turn the martial arts king Bruce Lee’s home into a museum. Lee’s daughter, Shannon Lee, along with a panel of architects and town planners, are to serve as judges, with winners announced in November or December.

According to a statement by Rita Lau, Hong Kong’s secretary for commerce and economic development, the government has also commissioned two films, a documentary of the building of the museum and a biography of Lee, who died in 1973. Yu Panglin, owner of the property, has offered $13,000 in prize money. In July Mr. Yu, a real estate tycoon and philanthropist, donated the 5,600-square-foot town house in the Kowloon area of Hong Kong to that region’s government for the purpose of turning it into a memorial for Lee.

"Yellow Submarine" director Heinz Edelmann dies at 75

HERB & DOROTHY

Arthouse Films premiers a new award-winning documentary called HERB & DOROTHY. It will open July 31st in Seattle at Northwest Film Forum.

The film tells the extraordinary story of Herbert Vogel, a postal worker, and Dorothy Vogel, a librarian, who managed to build one of the most important contemporary art collections in history with very modest means. They lived off of Dorothy’s salary and used Herb’s to collect art. They only had two requirements when purchasing art: the piece had to be affordable, and it had to be small enough to fit in their one-bedroom Manhattan apartment.

Over the decades they collected over 2000 pieces of art, (keeping all of it in their tiny apartment) and became patrons of artists like Sol LeWitt, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Richard Tuttle, Chuck Close, Robert and Sylvia Mangold, Lynda Benglis, Pat Steir, Robert Barry, Lucio Pozzi, and Lawrence Weiner.

What's in a name...

On the first day of Kindergarten, I met four other girls named Jennifer. I call that incident my first identity crisis; it was the day my name changed from "Jennifer" to "Jennifer K," a moniker I carried with me until I went to college and became "Jen."

I have always been fascinated with life stories, with the seemingly mundane, with the choices and experiences people make, with how their lives take shape. So, I decided to develop an oral history / photography project that blends my interest in life stories, portraiture, and with the name Jennifer.

The Jennifer Project chronicles the experiences of Jennifers as they move through their lives with a name carried by many other women, asking: has the name influenced the way they live their lives? has it been a challenge for them? what are the techniques they have used to deal with multiple Jennifers in their lives?

Thus far, I have held two local Jennifer photo shoots, interviewing the Jennifers, and then taking their portraits. I'm hoping to do one Jennifer photo shoot per month. If you or anyone you know is a Jennifer, please check out my blog or contact me on: coolchickphoto@me.com. I am hoping to have at least 20 Jennifers photographed for the exhibit. I have a solo show scheduled at Kaladi Brothers Coffee in December. It is my hope to get the exhibit finished by then, but I'm still hunting down Jennifers...

In addition to the photo exhibit, The Jennifer Project, upon a suggestion by a Jennifer, has gone on Twitter. Many non-local Jennifers have sent in their biographies to be included in the project.

It's been an interesting journey thus far; I am learning a lot about myself, how the name has influenced me, and meeting people from around the world who carry my same name. I look forward to meeting more Jennifers in the coming months.

The Fate of Comparative Collections by David Francis

Now that an animal’s true taxonomy
depends on a map of its DNA,
observation alone fails to tell us much.
To the eye for instance, one Texas yellow bat
looks much like another when in fact their blood
reveals they’re only remotely related. Once,
not long ago, we studied animals in museums
by collecting as many specimens as we could,
but now the drawers of catalogued skulls
and shelves of organ jars are as obsolete
as natural history. What then did they believe
they were studying, those last few heroes
of the empirical method, what, specifically,
were they laboring to prove? Like monks
they stubbornly labeled their objects of death,
publishing such tracts as “Cannibalism in Frogs”
and “Behavior of Chickens in Thunderstorms.”

Mechanical Elements: Call for submisisons

The Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center is issuing a call to artists for the exhibit Mechanical Elements, slated for Sept. 4-30. The overall best of show winner will receive a cash prize of $1,000.

The center is seeking submissions of two- and three-dimensional art work for its ongoing juried exhibits, with opening receptions held the first Friday of each month during downtown Fort Myers Art Walk events.

For the September 2009 exhibit, the artistic theme is based on Anthony Burgess's play, "A Clockwork Orange," a theological drama dealing with ethics and morality. Images related to clockwork, industry, mechanisms and machinery are appropriate.

Heaven & Earth, good news and bad news

CoCA's Heaven and Earth exhibition opened on Saturday June 27th to rave reviews. The Carkeek Educational Learning Center was packed with artists and supporters alike, the weather was perfect and people spend the days wondering around the park enjoying the exhibition. That's the good news.

And now for the bad news... Unfortunately within a few days several pieces from artist Barbara DePirro were destroyed by vandals and Stephen Rock's installation was hit too (but at least not destroyed).

We were aware of this possibility and unfortunately it has become a reality. Shame too, Barbara's pieces were wonderful.

Here's a chance for you to put those mad Photoshop skills to the test and design a new icon for iTunes. Gizmodo is hosting a contest to develop and new icon for iTunes. No word if Lord Jobs will actually implement it in the next upgrade but it sound like fun anyway.
