Call for exhibitions in City Hall galleries in 2008

Artists and community groups invited to submit proposals reflecting Seattle’s diversity

SEATTLE— The city of Seattle seeks artist and community exhibition proposals for display in two City Hall gallery spaces in 2008.

The galleries — the City Hall Lobby Gallery and the Anne Focke Gallery — focus on artworks that reflect the broad diversity of Seattle’s communities and highlight the work of regional artists, nonprofit organizations and community groups. Previous exhibitions have showcased city neighborhoods and their residents, the work of city departments, the city’s architecture, its jazz musicians and its sister-city relationships.

Group or solo exhibitions are welcome and will be displayed from six to eight weeks. Large exhibitions may be displayed in both the City Hall Lobby Gallery and Anne Focke Gallery.

The galleries are equipped to display 2-D materials. 3-D exhibitions will be considered, providing applicants can furnish necessary display cases. Video and media works will not be accepted. The City Hall Lobby Gallery features eight, 6' x 4' double-sided, metal, peg-board panels. The Anne Focke Gallery features a 120-foot long display wall (with professional hanging system) and is located on the L2 level of City Hall.

A panel of city employees administered by the Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs will review the applications and select 2008 exhibitions. Application deadline is (11 p.m., PST) Friday, Dec., 21. The 2008 exhibition cycle will begin in February. All applications must be submitted digitally. A link to the online application is available at www.seattle.gov/arts. Welcome to the Center on Contemporary Arts (CoCA) blog. We are based in Seattle and will be bringing you information about our programs, including: art exhibits, gallery showings, interviews, reviews, events, parties, meetings, sponsorship funding, government grants, prizes/recognition, photos, and other news and opinions about the art scene--or in other words, pretty much, everything relevant to CoCA and it’s members interests and those of the art appreciating community at large.

Can you imagine living without art? Every wall would be painted gray, every person would dress in the same style of clothing and every car driven down the road would be painted black. Who wants to live that way? Not us! Contemporary Art is the living vibrant soul of the community, providing fresh and novel ways to look at and experience the world and community around us. It’s an outlet for how we feel about what is going on around us and it’s also a reflection about whether we think it’s good, bad, or indifferent. Or not.
