Storefronts Seattle is now accepting applications for its three program tracks: Installations, Artist Residencies, and Creative Enterprise. Deadline for all applications is January 31, 2011 at 11:00 PM Pacific Standard Time.

Installations offer artists a temporary space to display any two-dimensional, three-dimensional or new media artwork. If you are interested in applying for the Installation track, find the application and guidelines here. Artists applying to the Installations track will use CaFÉ™, a Web‐based online application service.

Artist Residencies offer artists of any discipline the space to pursue new projects. Residencies are approximately 3 months in duration, with extensions possible dependent on space availability and number of applicants. Residency spaces are not open to the general public and do not house public events (such as performances or exhibits).

After a bit of negotiating, Suzanne Tidwell and her partner, Beth Newfield, received permission to wrap several twenty-foot trees in front of East Lake High School with yarn panels and crochet snowflakes. The installation took fifteen hours for eleven volunteers, and cost $1,500!

The Vermont Photography Workplace seek photographs exploring the theme of FLIGHT. From birds to ballerinas, from airplanes to dust motes, subjects that capture the experience of lessening gravity’s pull will constitute this juried exhibition.

Forty photographs will be selected for exhibition on the walls of PhotoPlace Gallery and on the gallery website by juror David Bram. An additional thirty-five images will be chosen for PhotoPlace's "On-Line Gallery Annex." All selected work will be included in a full-color exhibition catalogue available for purchase from Blurb Books. To help artists defray costs, PhotoPlace Gallery offers to mat and frame work selected for exhibition free of charge, providing artists print their images to our pre-cut mat and frame sizes.

PDX Bridge Festival is a collaborative non-profit with a mission to raise awareness and foster appreciation of the Willamette River Bridges through artistic, cultural, educational and historic programming. Our goal is to celebrate the bridges with a civic festival of artistic excellence, producing an awe-inspiring public arts celebration with the longevity and magnetism to function as the premier showcase for Portland arts.

We are looking for artists of all types—painters, sculptors, photographers, collagists, installation artists, filmmakers, performers, and musicians—to take part in this community-sourced, citywide celebration of the bridges. Using “Bridge” as a thematic or metaphorical element of your work is encouraged, though it is not required. The “Bridge” theme may include—but is not limited to—bridging communities, bridging styles, bridging time periods, concepts, politics, perspective, mediums, etc. In other words, we are open to all quality works of art and performance, and leave it to you to explain the bridge link in your artistic statement.

Pac Man turns 30

Pac Man celebrated its 30th anniversary this Saturday.

The invention of Toru Iwatani, a game designer for Namco, set out to design a woman friendly game in response to the shoot up games that dominated the market back then (and still do). By creating a cute cast of characters and a design sensibility that appealed to wider audiences, Iwatani broadened the appeal and marketability of games, creating what some call the first “casual game.”

Here's an interesting bit of Pac Man trivia, its original name was "Puck-Man" but was changed because company officials feared American kids would swap the "P" with an "F". Good call, I certainly would have.

City of Seattle seeking emerging artists for Civic Square fence art projec

The Seattle Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the Department of Finance and Administrative Services (DFAS) and Triad Development, Inc., seeks up to eight emerging artists to develop temporary, large-scale, colorful panels for the fence surrounding the Civic Square construction site in downtown Seattle. The Civic Square site is located between Third and Fourth avenues and Cherry and James streets.

The art project is intended to celebrate Seattle’s vibrancy, cultural life, history and position in the forefront of environmental sustainability. Artists should submit images of existing artwork in any two-dimensional medium. A selection panel will choose up to six images per selected artist. Fabricators will produce the panels from selected artwork and install the fence panels in late summer or early fall 2010. Each side of the Civic Square’s fence (north, east, south and west) will display up to six artwork panels. The artwork will be exhibited for approximately one year.

The call is open to emerging professional artists living within 100 miles of Seattle. An emerging artist is considered to be an artist in the early stage of his or her career (five years or less). A link to the online application and guidelines is available at www.seattle.gov/arts.

Carnegie Museum of Art Announces a Call for Submissions for Two-Minute Film Festival

There is no fee to enter and entrants must be at least 18 years of age.

The Carnegie Museum of Art invites artists and filmmakers (amateur or professional) to submit their finest—and shortest—work for consideration for inclusion in the Two-Minute Film Festival.

Submissions should respond in some way to the broad theme “A Brief History of…” and may be created using media of the filmmaker’s choice (camera, camcorder, cell phone, animation program). Entries must be two minutes or less in length, include a title card, and be submitted via CD or DVD as uncompressed QuickTime files (.mov) for compilation purposes. Entrants must also include a screening copy of their film—either by providing a YouTube link or a playable DVD.

Entries are now being accepted for "Transcendence - The Magic of Glass", a JURIED CONTEMPORARY GLASS ART EXHIBITION in Sequim, WA, September 1-25, 2010. This show is part of the GLASS ART FESTIVAL and hosted by the MAC, Museum & Arts Center in the Sequim-Dungeness Valley. Entries may be shipped. The Whistler Film Festival is looking for submissions for the 10th annual edition. This year the festival will run from December 1st to 5th 2010.

The National Self-Portrait Exhibition has become one of our most viewed and anticipated exhibitions to date. Now in its 6th year, the self-portrait exhibition will be a two-part exhibit. The guest juror will select 40 works for the gallery exhibition and 100 works will be selected for a permanent online exhibition to open simultaneously with the gallery exhibit. Toronto artist Lisa Murphy has designed a book of nude photography for the blind.
She converts nude photographs into raised vacuum formed pages. The resulting book is titled Tactile Minds.

I can't say I follow the reasoning but her images depict naked people dressed as elephants, bunnies, a robot and a "satanic ram." The cover features a 3D vagina.

How to submit work for consideration by a curator:
MASS MoCA’s Curatorial Department welcomes submissions from artists. Malcolm Mclaren dead at 64

Former Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren has died today at age 64, after a long fight against cancer.

McLaren was born in 1946 in the UK capital and was raised in the Stoke Newington area of the city by his grandmother. Initially an art student he attended St Martin's College Of Art and Goldsmiths College. In addition to managing the Sex Pistols McLaren was one of England's hottest fasion designers during the 1980's punk - new wave movement.

S3A presents a two night/two neighborhood event called “W3AVE”, bringing together 18 Seattle urban artists for a live collaborative art session the first night, followed by an opening reception and auction the next night.

The live painting event on the first night will take place at the Henry Art Gallery for their “Open Floor” program on Thursday, April 29th from 7-9pm. The reception and auction for the finished collaborative pieces will take place on Friday, April 30th from 6-9pm at City Hostel Seattle in Belltown. Both events are free and open to the public.

The artist line-up includes: Ego, Stacey Rozich, Augie Pagan, Weirdo, Solace, John Osgood, Kevin “Sensei23” Sullivan, Zach Bohnenkamp, CASH, Ninjagrl, 179, Joe Vollan, Mat Savage, PaperMarbleS, Jeremy Gregory, Justin Hillgrove, Mike Capp and Mike Gardner. The artists have been divided into six teams of three. Each artist will show up to the live event with a 12”x16” canvas that they have already started to work on. During the live event, they will swap their canvas with each of their team members and contribute to their canvases while the audience watches. By the end of the live event, each team will have three completed collaborative pieces to be auctioned off the following evening.

In addition, both events will include: DJ EMC and the Acid Unicorn dropping contemporary beats, cooking up an engaging blend of dance grooves and known and loved favorites - from yesterday, today and tomorrow.

Last September the Latvian Centre for Contemporary Art produced an international art project SURVIVAL KIT, which invited over 70 artists to reflect upon diverse survival strategies in the modern world. The global society is currently actively preoccupied with this subject and it has become particularly urgent also in Latvia. The project took place in the empty shopping spaces of the city, one of the most noticeable features in the face of the economic crisis. Artists turned the empty retail premises into creative laboratories that housed exhibitions, an improvised second-hand fashion parlour, a bookstore and a whole array of activities that involved the society.

iPad, looking past the hype...

I've always been a big fan of Apple products because they have a strong foundation in industrial design, the iPad is no exception. As with all first generation products I suggest waiting until at least rev 2.0 before buying but so far the reviews have been positive from an industrial design perspective but come on you can only run one app at a time? The only time I'm running one app is when I just powered up and have yet to launch the 2nd app. Seems silly to me.

Ellen Ziegler's ambitious drawing series evokes the visual and auditory hallucinations that occur during the period between waking and sleeping, known as the “hypnopompic state”.

Drawings are made on asphalt roofing paper (tar paper) with metallic pigments and other media. The smell of tar evokes for Ziegler the primeval ooze of the La Brea Tar Pits in her native Los Angeles, where dinosaur bones continue to be excavated. This underground source of fossils, fuel and prehistory is analogous to the upwelling of images from the unconscious mind.

The drawing installation in the gallery stairwell alludes to the crossover between architecture and the work of the artist. Tar paper is a commonplace, unremarkable and "base" building material; Ziegler finds metaphorical richness by mining the psyche for associations. In addition, "its rough, black smelliness, cheapness, and endless linear dimension makes it a manic draftsperson's dream."

CoCA's “Resident Alien” Artist Wins Suit Against Washington State Arts Commission

After a lengthy and exhausting process, artist Simon Kogan recently won a hearing against the Washington State Arts Commission for removal of his name on the “Public Artist Roster.” Kogan, in addition to numerous other artists, had been removed for various reasons in 2008 when the Commission decided to “clean house,” finding Kogan’s work lacked “cohesiveness,” an attribute that was not among the criteria that the Commission was attempting to define. Kohan appealed his rejection in 2009 but was denied; he appealed again and was again denied at a hearing with the Chair of the Commission. Finally he filed suit at his own expense. After various procedures, filings, and extensions, the case was heard in February, 2010. Thurston County Judge Richard Hicks awarded Kogan all attorney fees plus reinstatement, granting his petition and recommending that the Commission operate with greater transparency, including precisely defining the criteria and keeping artists on the roster once they meet them.

Artists, designers and theoreticians are invited to submit research and production proposals to become a researcher at the Jan van Eyck Academie. Candidates can either apply with a topic of their own or for a project formulated by the institute itself. In order to realise these projects, the Jan van Eyck offers the necessary made-to-measure artistic, technical and auxiliary preconditions.

The Jan van Eyck Academie is an institute for research and production in the fields of fine art, design and theory. Every year, 48 international researchers realise their individual or collective projects in the artistic and critical environment that is the Jan van Eyck. In doing so, they are advised by a team of artists, designers and theoreticians who have won their spurs globally. The researchers can also avail themselves of facilities that support their projects from first concept to public presentation. All in all, the Jan van Eyck offers artists, designers and theoreticians time and space to do research and realise productions, either about topics of their own choosing or as part of a project formulated by the institute itself.

Multi-Disciplinary Research

Artists, designers and theoreticians at the Jan van Eyck Academie work alongside each other and establish cross-disciplinary exchange. The academy is not led by predetermined leitmotivs. Artists, designers and theoreticians can submit independently formulated proposals for research and/or production in the departments of Fine Art, Design and Theory. They can also participate in research projects formulated by the departments (please see http://www.janvaneyck.nl).

The research projects, miscellaneous in nature, make the Jan van Eyck a multi-disciplinary institute. This also shows in the programme of the institute. Researchers, departments and the institute organise various weekly activities, to which special speakers are invited: lectures, seminars, workshops, screenings, exhibitions, discussions, … The Jan van Eyck community and external interested parties are welcome to attend this programme. The result is a dynamic and critical exchange between the different agents from within and outside of the Jan van Eyck.

Facilities

Researchers are advised by a team of artists, designers and theoreticians who have won their spurs globally. They receive their own studio and a stipend. Furthermore, researchers can make use of all kinds of facilities which support their projects, from first concept to public presentation, including the library, the documentation centre and various workshops: materials (wood and other materials); time-based productions; analogue and digital (online and offline) publishing (including photography and silkscreen). They can also get assistance with their print work, the editing and distribution of publications and the publicity of events.

Applications

Candidates applying for Fine Art, Design or Theory are asked to propose an individual research project. They can also indicate their interest in participating in one of the projects that are offered by the department of their choice or one of the other departments.

The academic year runs from 1 January to 31 December. Research candidates can apply for a one-year or two-year research period starting annually on 1 January. It is also possible to apply to do research for a different period and with a different starting date.

Fine Art

The Fine Art department offers a unique space for experimentation, production, reflection and debate. Researchers conduct their artistic research in an environment that encourages questioning of the assumptions, forms, meanings and contexts that are tied to the practice of making art today. The Fine Art department welcomes artists, individuals and groups, without stipulating conditions regarding form, content and media. Artistic practice is supported by a programme of events and sustained conversations organised by the researchers and advising researchers, according to their interests.

Design

The Design department focuses on design as research, design as discourse and design as publishing. It initiates and supports research projects in the areas of cultural and corporate identity, mapping, print and new media publishing, urban and regional identity, and book design. The department expressly solicits individual designers to propose and carry out their own research in exchange with the institute’s array of events and presentations. Whereas the department formerly focused on graphic and communication design, it has widened its scope to include spatial, product and service design.

Theory

The Theory department at the Jan van Eyck Academie is an international platform for reflection and research. Its mission is to create the opportunity for outstanding researchers to explore alternative ways of shaping their intellectual horizons by providing a stimulating environment for critical inquiry and intense debate. The Theory department welcomes applications from researchers of unusual promise who pursue their artistic and intellectual view of the interface of critical theory, philosophy, aesthetics, psychoanalysis and the visual arts. Candidates can associate with one of the research projects of the department. Applications not or only indirectly related to the research projects will be considered on equal terms.

Appliance Depot has put out a call for artists interested in creating art from appliance parts for its second-annual Appliance Art Revival, to be held in late spring.

The revival is a fund raising auction for Appliance Depot, a nonprofit training business that salvages, repairs and sells used appliances.

The job training program saves donated appliances for reuse, generating thousands of leftover parts, including knobs, handles, tubes and hoses, in the process, Jager said.

Interested artists can pick up free appliance parts from Appliance Depot, 802 Marine Drive. Revenue from the auction will be shared between Appliance Depot and the artist.

The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, March 31, with selected works displayed in the community prior to the auction. For more information, call 527-2646.

The 2009 CoCA Art Marathon and Auction

CoCA will hold its 17th annual Art Marathon and Auction December 4 and 5 at the Fremont Abbey Arts Center, on 4272 Fremont Ave N. CoCA pioneered the concept of the 'endurance' art event beginning in 1992 and has gradually opened the Marathon to include a variety of media in addition to the usual painting. The event remains the region's only 24-hour extravaganza, a spectacle that over the years has come to define CoCA's edgy mix of emerging and established artists.

For 24 hours, from 9am Friday to 9am Saturday, 20 artists are locked in a room with nothing but their art supplies. Sure, we bring in a trough of gruel and a barrel of grog every so often, but the art is what it's all about. Drawing, Painting, Sculpting, Hot Waxing (Encaustic), Photographing, Video-Taping, Versifying, Editing, and who knows what for sure. Over 100 works of art will be spontaneously created, with some of the artists engaging in impromptu collaborations and improvisations with each other's materials. Proceeds are split between the artists and CoCA.

2009 CoCA Annual

CoCA presents the 2009 Annual, a juried exhibition exhibiting work from emerging as well as established artists in a wide variety of visual media. Artists in any region and any country were welcome to submit, and entries were received from 7 countries and 35 states. The exhibit will showcase the ways in which contemporary artists, regardless of their location, share similar aesthetic concerns and conceptual approaches in a world of increasingly dramatic flux.

CoCA has presented the Annual since 1989, each time inviting an independent juror to select the work from among the entries received. For this year's 20th anniversary of the show, CoCA is proud to have Jess Van Nostrand as juror.

Jess Van Nostrand is Exhibitions Curator at Cornish College of the Arts and author of numerous essays and articles about the arts including the popular "Artists' Guide to Seattle" published by the Seattle Convention and Visitors Bureau. She holds a BA in Art History from The George Washington University and an MA in Art History from Richmond University, London. Van Nostrand is a portfolio instructor for the Artist Trust EDGE program, and founder of the art program at Joe Bar for emerging artists. She currently serves as Chair of the Seattle alliance of ArtTable, the national organization for women leaders. Curating in Seattle since 2003, she has developed an emphasis on dialogue between artists from the Northwest and other cities.

There will be a reception for the artists, the work, and the juror on Thursday November 19 2009, at CoCA's Ballard Gallery inside the Shilshole Bay Beach Club at 6413 Seaview Ave NW Seattle, WA 98107 (Free entry and parking provided). A $500 first prize and a $250 second prize will be awarded by the juror at the reception. A catalog of the show will feature artists' statements, biographies, and images from participating artists, as well as an introductory essay by the juror.

Call to Fiber and Jewelry Artists

Larson Gallery is accepting entries for Nature By Design: New Directions in Fiber and Jewelry, a new biennial national juried exhibition. The New Directions in Fiber and Jewelry series is a “redefinition” of Art to Wear, the fiber and jewelry biennial that has been hosted by Larson Gallery for nine years. New Directions in Fiber and Jewelry offers a broader platform for fiber and jewelry artists beyond garment or wearable art. This year’s theme is Nature by Design. Submissions may include wearable objects in fiber and jewelry media as well as sculpture, wall hangings and other mixed media work.

This year’s jurors are Lou Cabeen, Associate Professor - Fibers at the University of Washington and Sharon Campbell, co-founder of Art Jewelry Forum. Approximately $3,000 in prize money will be awarded.

Applicants should send CDs with images of actual work to be considered. Entries sent by mail (USPS/Fed-EX/UPS) must be received by 5 pm, February 19, 2010. Entries may also be hand-delivered to the Larson Gallery, on the Yakima Valley Community College Campus, 16th and Nob Hill. Hand-delivered entries will be accepted February 16 through 19, 10am to 5pm. Entry fees are $12 per submission with a maximum of 4 submissions per artist.

Only original artwork not previously shown in a juried exhibition at the Larson Gallery and completed during the preceding two calendar years will be considered. All artwork must be designed and executed by the exhibiting artist. Artwork that is known or suspected to be a direct copy of published/copyrighted material will be disqualified. AIA Portland hosts Architecture+Design Festival

The festival kicks off Oct. 1 with a free opening-night party and continues through the rest of the month. Events will include design awards, architecture tours by foot and bicycle,

From November 19, 2009 – January 9, 2010, CoCA will present the 2009 Annual, a juried exhibition that seeks work from emerging as well as established artists in a wide variety of visual media. The exhibit will showcase the ways in which contemporary artists, regardless of their location, share similar aesthetic concerns and conceptual approaches in a world of increasingly dramatic flux.

CoCA has presented the Annual since 1989, each time inviting an independent juror to select the work from among the entries received. For this year’s 20th anniversary of the show, CoCA is proud to have Jess Van Nostrand as juror.

Jess Van Nostrand is Exhibitions Curator at Cornish College of the Arts and author of numerous essays and articles about the arts including the popular “Artists’ Guide to Seattle” published by the Seattle Convention and Visitors Bureau. She holds a BA in Art History from The George Washington University and an MA in Art History from
Richmond University, London. Van Nostrand is a portfolio instructor for the Artist Trust EDGE program, and founder of the art program at Joe Bar for emerging artists. She currently serves as Chair of the Seattle alliance of ArtTable, the national organization for women leaders. Curating in Seattle since 2003, she has developed an emphasis on dialogue between artists from the Northwest and other cities.

There will be a reception for the artists, the work, and the juror on Thursday November 19 2009, at CoCA Ballard inside the Shilshole Bay Beach Club at 6413 Seaview Ave NW Seattle, WA 98107. The gallery includes approximately
75 feet of wall space and is well attended by a variety of audiences. Large scale mixed-media installations may be accommodated at CoCA Belltown (approx. dimensions 33’ x 3’). A $500 first prize and a $250 second prize will be awarded by the juror. A catalog of the show will feature artists statements, biographies, and images from participating artists, as well as an introductory essay by the juror. In addition to having their work archived on CoCA’s website, artists from the 2009 Annual will also invited to participate in CoCA’s new online store.

Submissions are by email with the following requirements:

Submit up to a maximum of 5 different pieces and no more than 2 to 3 photos of each piece in jpeg format. Maximum dimension of 1200 pixels in either direction

A description of the images. Send as an attachment in either .PDF or .Doc file format (artwork title, dimensions, medium and year of creation)

250 word artist’s statement. Send as an attachment in either .PDF or .Doc file format.

City of Seattle seeks portable artworks by mid-career artists Seattle Public Utilities’ to purchase works for portable collection

SEATTLE - Seattle’s Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs, in partnership with Seattle Public Utilities (SPU), seeks to purchase available artworks from mid-career artists for SPU's Portable Works Collection.

Artists with at least 10 years of professional experience and a significant exhibition history are encouraged to apply. The call is open to residents of Washington, Oregon, British Columbia or Alaska. Portable works in all art mediums will be considered.

A panel of arts professionals advised by SPU staff will select the artworks for purchase. The total purchase budget is $100,000 and is supported by SPU 1% for Art funds. The application deadline is 11 p.m. (Pacific Time), Wednesday, Sept. 30. A link to the online application and guidelines is available at www.seattle.gov/arts.

Workshop goals

Students will create a finished project that will be showcased during the final exhibition of student works October 24th 6-9pm.

The Bertoldi building, which is the historical name of the building which now houses the GAC. It was built in 1904, and used as a ballroom for many years.While no longer used as a ballroom, it has been turned into one of Seattle’s more cutting edge Arts education facilities. A JURIED EXHIBITION
Scope

Collage, an artistic concept associated with the beginning of Modern Art, entails much more than the idea of gluing something onto something else. The names that stand out among the pioneers are: Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Marcel Duchamp, Kurt Schwitters, Hannah Hoch, Joseph Cornell, Louise Nevelson, Romare Bearden, Ray Johnson, Edward Kienholz and Robert Rauschenberg. Collage and Assemblage combine two- and three-dimensional images and materials to create original art. Utilizing various adherence methods, the process combines often unrelated items and other media to investigate public and private issues, some seriously, some "tongue-in-cheek."
Eligibility

Open to all artists - painters, sculptors, and printmakers - over 18 years of age residing in the states of Alaska, California, Hawaii, Oregon, and Washington. Artists are invited to submit up to three collages or assemblages on any theme. Works selected by jurors from submitted entries will be chosen on the basis of creative excellence and quality of execution. All works must be original and completed within the last two years. "Digital Collage" is not eligible for this exhibition, although collages and assemblages that incorporate digitally created elements are eligible. Coos Art Museum's "On the Cutting Edge: West Coast Artists Using Collage/Assemblage" committee will be the final authority on eligibility. Accepted works meant for wall hanging must be ready with all necessary hardware in place.
