SAM: 31st Annual Betty Bowen Award Call for Artist Entries

Visual artists working in Washington, Oregon or Idaho are invited to apply for the Seattle Art Museum’s annual Betty Bowen Award. Applications are available beginning June 1 at www.callforentry.org, and the deadline for submissions is Saturday, August 1, 2009.

For 31 years, the Betty Bowen award has provided artists with an opportunity to introduce their work to SAM’s curators of modern and contemporary art and the Betty Bowen Committee members, and to have their work critiqued by their peers. Each year, two artists are selected to serve as rotating members of the committee. This year artists Dan Webb, the 2003 Betty Bowen Award winner, and Isaac Layman, the 2008 Betty Bowen Award recipient, are will be involved in the selection process.

Who is Elegible for the Award?
Visual artists working in Washington, Oregon or Idaho. Sorry, no performing arts.

What is the Betty Bowen Award?
Betty Bowen (1918–1977) was a Washington native and an enthusiastic supporter of Northwest artists. Her friends established the annual Betty Bowen Award as a celebration of her life and to honor and continue her efforts to provide financial support to the artists of the region. Since 1977, the Seattle Art Museum has hosted the yearly grant application process by which the selection committee chooses one visual artist working in Washington, Oregon or Idaho to receive an unrestricted cash award.

The Betty Bowen committee will announce the amount of this year’s award when the finalists are announced in September. Last year’s Betty Bowen award recipient received an unrestricted $15,000 award. In addition, the committee awarded $2,500 to the recipient of the PONCHO Special Recognition award and $2,500 to the Kayla Skinner Special Recognition award winner.

CoCA Ballard: Tracy Boyd

Tracy Boyd: Seattle Sketches

DATES: May 26 – July 6, 2009

RECEPTION: Thursday, June 11, 2009, 6-9p

Like many emerging artists, Seattle figurative painter, Tracy Boyd, longs to understand key “art scene” people. Who are they, really? What do they do, and what motivates them? She seeks this understanding because she feels these people are in the way of her artistic journey.

In this series, Boyd depicts Northwest art figures in a manner she imagines will expose aspects of the person beneath the persona. Sometimes using unlikely tools, Boyd loosely applies heavy oil paint in a manner that seems to sculpt her subjects. She often adds graphic elements to the canvas that leave the viewer with more questions than answers. She does this to leave –or perhaps create- ambiguity that emulates people’s lives.

Siglio Press: Call for Submissions, women artists and writers

Siglio Press is looking for innovative image + text works by women artists and writers for a new anthology. Here’s what they have to say:

We are looking for a wide range of image+text work: including—but definitely not limited to—comics and graphic narratives, collage, photo+text works, drawings, text driven by typographical play, altered bookpages/environments, etc. We are most interested in work that plays with new taxonomies, reinvents narrative forms, investigates language, disrupts paradigms, creates unsettling, illuminating juxtapositions, spills over in excess, creates multiples strands of conversation and meaning, and/or is uncontainable in any single medium.

GUIDELINES:

Submit 1 - 12 pages for consideration.

It may be one complete work, a small, coherent collection of single works, or an excerpt from a longer work so long as it needs no introduction or explanation.

The work must reproduce well as line art or b/w half-tones. Preference is given to works originally intended for print, created as 2-D works, or works whose end-product are photographic documents.

Works may have been previously published so long as the author/artist retains the copyright.

Please include full contact information and a short bio in your email.
