Carve for a Cause

What can you create with an oversized squash and a good, sharp knife? Design within Reach is partnering with the Architects Without Borders (www.awb-seattle.org) and the Seattle Architecture Foundation (www.seattlearchitecture.org) to sponsor a pumpkin-carving contest like none other. Individuals ($20 donation) and firms ($350 donation) are encouraged to submit their vine-ripened masterpieces to be judged by a panel of local design experts at DWR Seattle. Register at www.awb-seattle.org and start carving your pumpkin for one of the five submission categories: Traditional (Scariest/Most Disturbing); Starchitecture (Best Imitation of a Famous Architect/Character); Freestyle (Most Creative/Artistic); Mystery (Judges’ Choice); and People’s Choice. Drop off your completed jack-o'-lantern at Mithun (Pier 56, 1201 Alaskan Way, Suite 200) from 9am to 3pm on the day of the reception, Thursday, October 30th at DWR Seattle. (Carving will not occur during the reception.) Carvers and noncarvers alike are welcome to attend and vote for the People’s Choice Award. All proceeds will benefit AWB’s current and future projects and further its mission to provide an effective, ecologically sensitive and culturally appropriate response to those in need. Snacks, refreshments and, of course, Halloween candy will be served.

RSVP to seattle@dwr.com.

Annual Design Review: Accepting applications

Annual Design Review
I.D. is now accepting entries into the 2009 Annual Design Review. Winners will appear in the July/August 2009 issue of I.D. Since 1954, the Annual Design Review has recognized the best in product, furniture, graphic, and environment design, from the iconic to the obscure. Throughout the years, this annual showcase has chronicled the evolution of design, and highlighted its impact on our material and visual culture. Each year, the featured work is chosen by a jury of leading practitioners, who, along with I.D.'s editorial team, focus the abundance of submissions into a clear survey of the state of design. The resulting overview is published in the July/August issue of I.D. magazine — the Annual Design Review issue.

Want to get a Chubby?

The Seattle Show recognizes and reward creative excellence in the legitimate, everyday workplace of the design, interactive, and advertising fields.

The Show only wishes to honor real work done for real clients with real marketing objectives. On occasion, work is entered that exists outside those boundaries, created solely for the purpose of winning an award, rather than satisfying a legitimate client’s needs. These types of entries are not permitted in the Seattle Show (except in the specific case of projects entered in special categories for unpublished work), and may be disqualified at the discretion of the judges if they feel the work does not appear to be legitimate.

2008 CoCA Annual: Hybrid

Call for Artists

From December 8 – January 30, CoCA will present the 2008 CoCA Annual, a juried exhibition, asking artist to respond to “hybrid”:

The elements of the world we live in are increasingly becoming synthesized, mixed and reorganized. New ideas are being combined with existing ones. From cars to food, politics and religion, biochemistry, new technologies and art, we are all experiencing the “hybrid”.

CoCA has presented the Annual since 1989, each time bringing in an independent juror to select the work from among the entries received. This year’s juror is Riko Nakasone.

Riko Nakasone has been the director and curator of the Bau-Xi Gallery (http://www.bau-xi.com) in Vancouver, British Columbia for over 8 years. The Bau-Xi Gallery represents a broad range of emerging and senior artists creating both representational and abstract work in diverse media.

There will be a reception for the artists, the work, and the juror on Thursday December 11, from 6-9pm, at CoCA’s Ballard Gallery inside the Shilshole Bay Beach Club at 6413 Seaview Ave NW Seattle, WA 98107. Free entry and parking provided.

A $500 first prize and a $250 second prize will be awarded by the juror.

Submissions are by email with the following requirements:

  • Up to five digital images of each piece, jpg file format, maximum dimension of 800 pixels in either direction. If the work is multi-media (film, video, electronic media, etc.), tailor your submission appropriately. Links are acceptable in this case.
  • A description of the images (artwork title, dimensions, medium and year of creation)
  • Artist’s statement (Send as an attachment not in the body of your email).
  • Resume/CV (Send as an attachment not in the body of your email)
  • Contact info (address, phone, email)
  • Artist web site link (if available)
  • $25 entry fee for first piece, $10 each additional piece. You may submit up to five images for each piece for the same fee.

Entry deadline is October 23, and winners will be notified by November 20. Selected work must be shipped to the gallery by December 1. Artists are responsible for packing, shipping & transit insurance costs to & from CoCA.

Project Obama: Call for submissions

Hello friends and friends of friends and like-minded strangers,

I need your help with a documentary project.

There has been a scarcity of Obama yard signs available in Raleigh and Durham, North Carolina. Consequently, people are getting creative and making their own. (I've lived through a solid ten presidential elections and have no recollection of people doing this before.) Friends in other communities across the country are also doing this. If you haven't already, encourage your kids to make a sign, or make one yourself, and send me photographs. In your email, please include your name, age, city and state (and if comfortable, your ethnicity).

I will post the images on my website (http://www.liisaogburn.com/Site/Home.html) as I receive them. In two weeks, if I receive enough, I will also make a short movie accompanied by music of selected signs. This will be posted here, on YouTube, and submitted to a variety of online media.

Be a part of the change. Send your signs. Send your friends' signs. Have hope, Liisa
