Drop City, we hardly knew ya...

Drop City gallery will be closing its doors on November 29th. Seattle's new kid on the block produced some great shows over the last year ("Take a Seat" being my personal favorite).

The current exhibition, John Fleming and W. Scott Trimble's RECLAIM, will be up through Saturday, November 29th. You may see photos of the installation on our website at www.dropcitygallery.com.

Check the space out before it closes!

Old Stories: A group photography exhibition at the UW HUB Gallery

This group exhibition explores the poster and how it can be enhanced, changed, and created into something that is not expected.

Four of the photographers come from a film/darkroom background and are reaching into the digital world to see where they might go.

The work is quite large and expanded - both physically and technically.

Please see the website for the larger group:

ABOUT PECHA KUCHA - http://www.pecha-kucha.org/

Pecha Kucha (the Japanese for the sound of conversation) gathers creative individuals to share their work and ideas in an informal environment. Pecha Kucha Night was conceived in 2003 by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham (from Klein Dytham architecture, in Tokyo), as a place for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public. Each presenter is allowed 20 images, each shown for 20 seconds each - giving 6 minutes 40 seconds of fame before the next presenter is up. This keeps presentations concise, the interest level up, and gives more people the chance to showcase their ideas, visions, work/areas of curiosity.

UNEMBEDDED: Four Independent Photojournalists on the War in Iraq

UNEMBEDDED is a national touring exhibit of 60 powerful and visually stunning images that tell the story of the war’s impact on the lives of the Iraqi people “on the ground” where the war is being waged. It is a powerful expression of the effects of war that go largely ignored by the mainstream media. It aims to enhance public awareness of the effects of U.S. policy on the Iraqis, their country and returning American veterans and their families.

Paintings inspired Web Art

While slaughtering a little time today I came across 2 web based artworks on rhizome.org.

The first is How to make a perfect Malevich using only basic HTML code, which is, ummm, pretty self-explanitory

and the second, which I found in a comment on the rhizome post where I found the first, My Data = My Mondrian, which creates a Mondrianish image based on the personal data you enter.

Dorkbot Burning Man Art Event

On the 10th at 911 media arts there was a Dorkbot Discussion about Dorky Burning Man Art. At Burning Man there's no shortage of wonderfully nerdy art. Seeing a lot of it collected in one discussion was great because no matter how much time you spend wandering around the playa spectating you can never see all there is to see. The event had a slideshowish/videoish presentation that showed a number of artworks that were there, highlighting some of the more techy art.

This was followed by a local artist Tanjent, giving a talk about the amazing art project he brought there. He brought a 7 foot wide spherical orb that he calls "Applecore" to Burning Man this year. I actually saw it out on the playa, and watched it for a while, it was quite nice. It has a projector inside the base the projects into a reflector and reflects beautiful patterned images onto the circumference of the orb. It was interesting to see the face and process behind one of the artworks in a context where the art could be discussed instead of in the whirlwind of experiences out there in the desert. A couple links to images and videos that show Applecore and how it was made are below:

After this a couple interviews from current.tv's TV Free Burning Man were shown. Aside from some little bandwidth issues these were really interesting. I've included the links below.

NW ISDA: What Have You Done For Me Lately

October 9th: "What Have You Done For Me Lately" - a design research work session.

This Fall the design and research consultancy, Lextant
(http://www.lextant.com/), recently featured in IDSA's "design
perspectives", and the IDSA Design Research section chair, Marty Gage, will be helping the Northwest Chapter answer the following questions:
- "Why is there a chapter of IDSA in the Northwest?",
- "What do Northwest designers want and need from the chapter "
- "How should the NW chapter provide for these wants and needs?".
Watch for a survey in your email in-box and get prepared to learn how to analyze survey results and turn them into design ideas at the October 9th work session.
